The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is a meeting place. Fact meets fiction, tragedy meets comedy, writers meets readers, and non-readers discover a life-long love of books. It is a place where connections are made, friendships forged, and new ideas are brought to life. It is where stories happen.
In 2019, the Festival engaged with more than 45,000 people. More than 180 writers met their fans and gained new readers. The Festival book shop was packed with new titles and comprehensive backlists of visiting authors, converting into significant sales. More than 10,000 books were sold at the 2019 Festival.
Authors featured in national and international media with the whole campaign recieving coverage worth more than US $30,000,000. The Festival hosts live radio broadcasts, and pre-recorded interviews on the in-flight entertainment system brings our Festival authors to Emirates’ 160+ destinations worldwide.
Literature play an important part in changing children’s lives; help them find their love of the written word by taking part in our school engagement programme. The Festival reached more than 30,000 students in 2019.
What happens at the Festival?
Events take the form of talks, ‘in conversations’, panel discussions, masterclasses, workshops and more, followed by book signings. Each session is carefully tailored for both author and audience, and cross-cultural conversations are a key element of the programme.
Audiences reflect the diverse population of Dubai. Many of our sessions offer simultaneous translation, and in 2017 we introduced sign language to several events.
Authors will enjoy an immersive experience of Arab hospitality at its best in a truly unique setting by Dubai Creek.
Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, one of the world’s leading literature festivals, is an initiative by the Emirates Literature Foundation, a not-for-profit NGO that supports and nurtures literature in the UAE and the region through a year-long programme of cultural initiatives.
