Defending people’s rights to healthcare and self-determination is an ongoing fight.

Our panellists, all pioneers in their fields, are some of the tireless fighters whose efforts are improving lives worldwide. They will discuss their work to make the world a safer place, and how their experiences inspired their books.

Edna Adan Ismail was Foreign Minister of Somaliland from 2003 to 2006. She is the director and founder of the Edna Adan Hospital in Hargeisa and the founder and Chancellor of Edna Adan University, which offers accredited higher education to a 75% female student population. She is an activist and pioneer in the struggle for the abolition of female genital mutilation. Her autobiography is A Woman of Firsts.

Onjali Q. Raúf is Founder and CEO of Making Herstory, a human rights organisation working to end the abuse and trafficking of women in all its forms. She is the author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, which won the 2019 Blue Peter Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and The Star Outside My Window which tackles the sometimes devastating consequences of domestic abuse on the lives of child survivors.
