Amin Maalouf and Taleb Alrefai are known for tackling difficult topics in their books. Most recently, Taleb edited the timely collection of essays The Colour of Tomorrow: The Arab Intellectual’s Perspective of the Post-Covid Era, with an introduction by Amin. When it comes to fiction, however, how do these two highly respected authors balance offering insight into the big questions of today with the demands of creating a satisfying story? In this not-to-be-missed panel they discuss their approaches to many challenging issues.

Amin Maalouf’s novels are well-known worldwide, translated into forty languages. His fourth novel, The Rock of Tanios, won the Prix Goncourt; in 2016 he was awarded Cultural Personality of the Year by the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, and in 2020 he was awarded the National Order of Merit by the French government.

Taleb Alrefai is a Kuwaiti novelist, storyteller and cultural advisor to Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature. He gained fame with his 1988 novel The Shadow of the Sun and has enjoyed continued critical acclaim for hard-hitting works such as The Scent of the Sea, which won the Kuwaiti State Prize for Literature.

Amin Maalouf will be appearing virtually. Taleb Alrefai will be present in person.
