What does tomorrow hold for Arab writers?

As Arabic writing begins to enjoy greater international recognition, two authors at the top of their game join their translator to discuss prizes, translation and the meaning of success.

Hoda Barakat won the 2001 Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature for The Tiller of Waters and the 2019 IPAF for her most recent novel The Night Mail. She has published six novels, two plays, a book of short stories and a book of memoirs.

Jokha Alharthi and Marilyn Booth won the 2019 Man Booker International Prize for Celestial Bodies. Jokha has also written three collections of short stories and two more novels, most recently Narinjah, which won the Sultan Qaboos Prize for Culture, Arts and Literature 2016. Marilyn is one of the foremost translators of Arabic. In addition to translating Hoda and Jokha, she has translated books by Elias Khoury, Alia Mamdouh, Nawal El Saadawi and many others.
