Where do stories come from, and who do we write them for?

Our panel explores the myriad ways different cultures and generations retell old stories and find in them new meanings, taking the Arabian Nights as their starting point.

Alwyn Hamilton is the author of Rebel of the Sands, which blends the mythologies of the Arabian Nights and the American West to create a surprising new story.

Dubai Abulhoul’s Galagolia was the first Emirati fantasy novel in English, and she has recently published a series of five children’s books on Emirati folklore.

Kevin Crossley-Holland is an English author, poet and translator who has drawn on Arthurian, Viking and Norse mythology and, most recently, British and Irish folktales in Between Worlds.

Tareq Imam is an award-winning Egyptian author and critic whose novel The City of Endless Walls has been called “the new 1001 Nights”.
