Dubai, February 2020:  The exciting finals of the Chevron Readers’ Cup, took place today at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (4-9 February 2020) following a  hotly contested live ‘read-off’.

Almost 4000 students entered this year’s reading quiz with 904 teams competing in the finals, which were held in Arabic and English in two age groups – Primary and Secondary. Teams answered questions from a list of books by Festival authors and the winners were awarded trophies, certificates and book vouchers.

The prizes were presented by Chevron Renu Sharma (General Manager & Country Chair -UAE- Chevron Middle East JV’s and Aviation) and Muhammad Al Sadek (Commercial & Government Relations Manager, Chevron Middle East) and festival authors: Tamsin Winter (secondary), Julia Johnson (primary) and Hussain Al Mutawaa (primary).

This year marks the ninth year Chevron has sponsored the competition, which has become an integral part of the company’s event calendar.  Renu Sharma (General Manager & Country Chair -UAE- Chevron Middle East JV’s & Aviation) said: “The Chevron Readers’ Cup is a lively event, and it demonstrates that reading isn’t just a solitary activity, it can be fun and entertaining too. As a company we have been very involved in the competition, recognising its great benefits in fostering a love of reading, which is hugely important for future academic success as well as giving children the enjoyment found in books which will last throughout their lives.’

First place: Indian International School – Jewels of IIS

Second place: Sharjah English School – Team B

Third place: St Mary’s Catholic High School – Mission Books


Secondary School winners:

First place: GEMS Cambridge International School – Quarters

Second place: Private International School – The Invictus

Third place: Abu Dhabi Indian School – Stormbringers


The Festival programme is brimming with sessions to engage, entertain and inform, with topics encompassing fiction, history, current affairs, food, health, travel, biography, business and more.  There are opportunities to appreciate poetry, take part in creative writing workshops and generally indulge in intelligent and articulate discussion on a wide range of topics. Sessions appeal to all ages and nationalities, featuring outstanding authors, thinkers and opinion formers.

The Festival is held with Founding Partners Emirates Airline and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated authority for heritage, arts, and culture.
