Author Ian McEwan’s Modern Classic Makes MENA Film Premiere at DIFF

Dubai, 4 December 2017: Following two successful instalments of Great Adaptations, the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Dubai International Film Festival have teamed up once again, this time to present the adaptation of international phenomenon On Chesil Beach. The film, based on the Man Booker-shortlisted novella of the same name, is penned by the author himself, award-winning writer Ian McEwan.

Starring Oscar-nominated actor Saoirse Ronan and up-and-coming British star Billy Howle, the romantic comedy is the tale of Florence and Edward, a couple in love and filled with hopes and dreams for a future together, despite their different backgrounds. The story unfolds during the summer of 1962, as the decisions they make impact the rest of their lives. The film will be making its MENA premiere as part of DIFF’s Cinema of the World programme on Thursday, December 7 at DIFF’s purpose built state-of-the-art screening venue, the Madinat Arena, Jumeirah.

Debutant director, Dominic Cooke, has already received praise for his sympathetic translation of this modern classic from page to screen. He will be enlightening audiences in Dubai about the film, its stars and the transition from written word to the big screen at a talk in the DIFF Forum Room following the premiere. The session will be moderated by Paul Blezard, Literary Director of Firebird Poetry Prizes.

‘I believe we could be entering a golden age of film adaptations,’ said Isobel Abulhoul, OBE, CEO and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation and Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. ‘The film and literary industries are no longer mutually exclusive, but form a symbiotic partnership that provides entertainment for all. Authors have now become scriptwriters and our films feel even more like the words on the page brought to life on screen. The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Dubai International Film Festival share a common love of storytelling, and we look forward to exploring the process of adapting books to films through this film and session.’

Shivani Pandya, DIFF Managing Director said: ‘This critically-acclaimed book is a touching story of love and loss and we have no doubt that the film will entertain and move our festival visitors. Ian McEwan’s books are such a rich source of cinematic inspiration, and we are delighted to partner with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature to bring the story of adapting On Chesil Beach for film fans to our Dubai audiences.’

The 2018 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature will continue to delve further into page to screen adaptations. Sessions include the DIFF-sponsored screening of the BAFTA-winning film Lion, starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara and a talk by the author Saroo Brierley, whose real life story the film was based on; Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians, the international hit that will be in cinemas next year and Cheryl Strayed, whose extraordinary journey on the Pacific Crest Trail was brought to life by Reese Witherspoon in the film, Wild. Also attending the Festival for the first time is Nnedi Okorafor, author of the ‘next Game of Thrones’, Who Fears Death, which is being adapted for television by George RR Martin and live from the US, The Martian author Andy Weir will discuss his bestselling book and the blockbuster film adaptation that was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Matt Damon.
