Samuel I. Schwartz is an award-winning American transportation engineer, the President, CEO and Founder of Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants. Schwartz popularised the phrase ‘gridlock’, earning him the nickname Gridlock Sam. He is the author of the acclaimed books Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and The Fall of Cars and No One at the Wheel: Driverless Cars and the Road of the Future.
He went on to design a trolley system in Aruba, engineered the transportation plan for the Barclays Centre and arranged the construction activities at the World Trade Centre site. Samuel also served as NYC Traffic Commissioner and then went on to hold the second-in-command post of First Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer. He has received more than a score of awards for his work, including 2018 Transportation Alternative Award, 2017 Riders Alliance Honoree, 2016 NYC Zoning Advisory Council Honor Award, 2014 AAA Traffic Safety Award, and Engineer of the Year from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the American Council of Engineering Companies.
