Onjali Q. Raúf’s debut novel The Boy at the Back of the Class won the 2019 Blue Peter Award and the 2019 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and was nominated for the Carnegie Medal. Inspired by a Syrian mother and baby she met in a Calais refugee camp, it portrays the refugee crisis through the eyes of a child.

Onjali was shortlisted for the Care2Impact award in April 2014, the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize in October 2014, and The Independent’s Happy List in 2017 for her works in the women’s rights sector.
