Mariela Shaker is an accomplished Syrian violinist who uses her music to build bridges and raise awareness of the plight of the Syrian people.
She survived the war in Syria after receiving a music scholarship to Monmouth College. Unable to return home, she was granted asylum in the United States and received another scholarship for pursuing her Master’s in Music Performance at DePaul University.
Shaker has performed and spoken at the United Nations in New York, The Nansen Refugee Awards in Geneva, UNHCR, Harvard University and more. She was honoured at the White House as a ‘Champion of Change’.
Mariela took part in the New York City edition of the How to do Good Speaker Tour, held at the Lincoln Center in May 2017, and received a standing ovation for her moving violin recital and talk about Syria.
