Johannes Els is the head of the Herpetology and Freshwater Fish Department at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife/Environment and Protected Areas Authority of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Middle East and North African Viper Specialist Group, West Asia Amphibian Specialist Group and the Freshwater Fish Specialist Group. His work comprises both in situ and ex situ conservation, including the management of the world’s largest conservation breeding programme for Arabian freshwater fishes.
Johannes authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications, including the atlases of the terrestrial reptiles of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, with his main focus and passion being the herpetofauna of Arabia for more than a decade. He is co-author of the books Freshwater Fishes of the Arabian Peninsula and Field Guide to the Reptiles of Oman.
